Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Dodge City KS
1124 AM CST Tue Jan 13 2026
.KEY MESSAGES...
- No precipitation will occur for the next week.
- A succession of dry cold fronts in between periods of
downslope will temporarily knock temperatures back to
seasonal averages.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 320 AM CST Tue Jan 13 2026
Downslope flow today will result in warm temperatures in the
60s for many. The exception will be for areas that still have
significant snow cover and melting (Ulysses for example), where
50s are expected. Upper level troughing over the Great Lakes
and embedded upper level disturbances moving southeastward out
of Canada will result in a series of dry cold fronts. After a
slightly cooler day Wednesday, expect another mild day Thursday
as downslope flow resumes.
The next cold front will pass Thursday night, with temperatures
closer to seasonal averages for the weekend. The coldest day in
terms of temperatures and wind chills will probably be Friday.
Very deep mixing will occur (possibly up to 700-750mb), and the
various model guidances indicate the potential to mix stronger
winds to the ground. Although temperatures Friday will likely
reach into the lower to mid 40s given strong vertical mixing,
wind gusts in the 45 to 60 mph range will make it feel more like
the teens and 20s. A high wind warning may be needed as well.
And given dewpoint temperatures near or below 0F, fire weather
may be a concern. Winds will back off for Saturday; and
temperatures will still be close to climatology, making it more
pleasant to be outside. Downslope flow may allow temperatures to
warm to above seasonal averages for Sunday before the next cold
front knocks highs back down to seasonal levels for Monday.
Despite the January cold fronts, the lack of snow cover all the
way north to the Canadian border will encourage air mass
modification in the lee of the Rockies as the cold air masses
move southeastward. There is nothing that indicates that the
cold air will hug the Rockies as it comes southward like we
often see in winter. There will be a strong northwest to
southeast oriented thermal gradient along the edge of the arctic
air to the northeast of here so that one can expect milder
temperatures at Elkhart and Ulysses compared to Hays and
Stafford.
Given the succession of dry cold fronts and periods of dry
downslope flow, precipitation chances are near 0% for the next
week. The various ensemble means show little to no
precipitation.
